The Baboon
Papio anubis
Baboons are large Old World primates valuable for cardiovascular, reproductive, and xenotransplantation research.
Their size and physiological similarity to humans make them particularly useful for surgical studies and organ transplant research.
Human Similarity
~93% genetic homology with extensive immune receptor cross-reactivity

Common Research Applications
Baboon Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC) are research-grade baboon peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) intended for preclinical and translational research. Each order includes a Certificate of Analysis (COA) with lot-specific information including viability data, cell counts, and handling details to support consistency across studies.
PBMCs are isolated mononuclear cells including lymphocytes and monocytes, critical for immunological research requiring viable, functional immune cells.
Available fresh or cryopreserved to match your experimental timeline and viability requirements.
Common applications
- T cell and B cell functional assays
- Flow cytometry and immunophenotyping
- Cytokine secretion and ELISpot assays
- Mixed lymphocyte reactions (MLR)
- CAR-T and cell therapy development
- Vaccine immunogenicity studies
Collection, processing & handling
PBMCs are isolated using density gradient separation with standardized protocols appropriate to the donor species. Fresh PBMCs are shipped in validated containers with temperature monitoring; cryopreserved PBMCs are shipped on dry ice with documented freeze-thaw protocols. Viability testing available upon request.
Quality control & documentation
QC testing options available on request, including material-appropriate analytical checks and extended documentation. Standard documentation includes collection/processing metadata, lot identifiers, and chain-of-custody records. Custom QC panels can be configured for GLP or regulatory-facing studies.
Also available: matched serum or plasma for comprehensive immune profiling from the same species for comprehensive study design.
Ordering notes
For specific donor criteria, source, volumes, or custom handling requirements, request a quote and include your study specifications. We routinely support longitudinal programs, matched sample sets, and custom collection protocols.

Baboons originated from African populations, and current research animals are bred in established USA colonies.

Our scientific team can advise on the optimal origin for your study design and regulatory requirements.
Baboon PBMCs contain lymphocytes (T cells, B cells, NK cells) and monocytes. Typical composition includes 60-80% T cells (CD3+), 5-15% B cells (CD20+), 5-15% NK cells (CD56+), and 5-20% monocytes (CD14+). Exact percentages vary by individual donor and species.
Many anti-human antibodies cross-react with baboon cells due to epitope conservation. We recommend consulting cross-reactivity databases and validating antibodies empirically. Common cross-reactive markers include CD3, CD4, CD8, CD14, CD20, and CD56.
Thaw vials rapidly in a 37°C water bath until a small ice crystal remains. Dilute slowly into pre-warmed complete medium, centrifuge gently (300 × g, 10 min), and resuspend in fresh medium. Rest cells for 1-2 hours before functional assays.
Post-thaw viability is guaranteed ≥70%. Actual viability typically ranges 75-90% when following recommended thawing protocols. Functional recovery may require 2-4 hours of resting.
