Bone marrow is aspirated from the iliac crest under general anesthesia using standard bone marrow aspiration needles. The aspirate is immediately centrifuged to separate cells from the supernatant (plasma-like fraction). First-pull aspirates are preferred to minimize peripheral blood dilution.
Typical yield is 1-5 mL of supernatant per aspiration, depending on species and aspirate volume. Larger primates yield more. The supernatant contains soluble factors from the marrow microenvironment. Pooled samples are available on request.
Bone marrow supernatant is evaluated for clarity and degree of hemolysis. Peripheral blood dilution is assessed based on the ratio of first-pull to subsequent aspirates. Standard documentation includes collection volume, centrifugation parameters, and donor health records.
