Feces are collected from metabolism cages (urine-free collection) or manually from the rectum under light sedation. Metabolism cage collection is preferred for timed and uncontaminated samples. Samples are immediately snap-frozen or placed in stabilization buffer depending on downstream application.
Typical collection yields 5-50 g per animal depending on species, diet, and timing. Single-animal or pooled samples are available. Specific preservatives (RNAlater for RNA, OMNIgene for microbiome, ethanol for metabolomics) can be specified at order.
Fecal samples are evaluated for consistency (Bristol scale noted when applicable), absence of urine contamination, and collection timing. Diet history, antibiotic use, and recent procedures are documented. Samples are collected into sterile containers and processed within 30 minutes of collection.
