Milk is collected from lactating females via manual expression or miniature breast pump under light sedation. The nipple area is cleaned with antiseptic prior to collection, and the first few drops are discarded to minimize contamination. Collection is timed relative to last nursing when possible.
Typical yield varies by species and lactation stage: cynomolgus monkeys yield 2-10 mL, rhesus monkeys 3-15 mL, and marmosets 0.5-2 mL per collection. Peak lactation yields the highest volumes. Pooled samples from multiple collections or donors are available.
Milk is evaluated for color, consistency, and absence of visible contamination (blood, debris). Samples are collected into sterile containers and aliquoted promptly. Lactation stage, time since last nursing, and parity are documented. Fat content and total protein data available on request.
