Synovial fluid is collected via arthrocentesis (joint aspiration) under general anesthesia using aseptic technique. The knee joint is most commonly sampled, though other joints (hip, shoulder) are available. The procedure is performed by trained veterinary staff using ultrasound guidance when needed.
Typical yield is 0.3-2.0 mL per joint depending on species and joint size. Larger primates yield more than smaller species. Pooled samples from multiple joints or donors are available for larger volume requirements.
Synovial fluid is evaluated for clarity, color, viscosity, and absence of gross blood contamination. Samples with hemarthrosis (bloody aspirate) are excluded from standard inventory. Cell count and differential data are available upon request.
