The Rhesus Monkey
Macaca mulatta
The rhesus macaque is one of the most studied primate species, fundamental to biomedical research for over a century.
With ~93% genetic homology to humans and extensive immunological characterization, rhesus monkeys are essential for vaccine development, HIV/AIDS research, and neuroscience studies.
Human Similarity
~93% genetic homology with extensive immune receptor cross-reactivity

Common Research Applications
Rhesus Monkey Vitreous Humour is research-grade rhesus macaque tissue intended for preclinical and translational research. Each order includes a Certificate of Analysis (COA) with lot-specific information and handling details to support consistency across studies.
Vitreous humor provides an ocular matrix for intravitreal drug delivery research and posterior segment biomarker studies.
Common applications
- Intravitreal drug delivery
- Posterior segment pharmacokinetics
- Diabetic eye disease research
- Vitreoretinal surgery research
- Ocular biomarker studies
Collection, processing & handling
Tissue is collected and processed with protocols designed to preserve downstream histology and molecular workflows. Available formats include fresh, frozen, OCT-embedded, or FFPE as appropriate. Cold-chain logistics with documented handling throughout.
Quality control & documentation
QC testing options available on request, including material-appropriate analytical checks and extended documentation. Standard documentation includes collection/processing metadata, lot identifiers, and chain-of-custody records. Custom QC panels can be configured for GLP or regulatory-facing studies.
Ordering notes
For specific donor criteria, source, volumes, or custom handling requirements, request a quote and include your study specifications. We routinely support longitudinal programs, matched sample sets, and custom collection protocols.
Intravitreal Drug Development
Measure drug concentrations and half-life following intravitreal injection for ocular PK and sustained-release formulation studies.
Retinal Disease Research
Study biomarkers and pathological mediators associated with diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment.
Blood-Retinal Barrier Studies
Assess inner and outer blood-retinal barrier integrity and permeability changes under disease or treatment conditions.
Posterior Segment Immunology
Evaluate inflammatory mediators (VEGF, cytokines, complement) in the vitreous compartment for uveitis and immune-mediated retinal diseases.
Ocular Biomarker Discovery
Identify novel proteomic, metabolomic, or lipidomic biomarkers in the posterior segment for ophthalmic drug development.

Vitreous humor is collected via pars plana vitreous tap using a 23-25G needle under general anesthesia, or during vitrectomy at necropsy. The procedure is performed by trained veterinary staff or ophthalmic surgeons. In terminal studies, both eyes are typically sampled.
Typical yield is 0.5-2.0 mL per eye depending on species size. Cynomolgus and rhesus monkeys yield approximately 1.5-2.0 mL, while marmosets yield approximately 0.3-0.5 mL. Pooled samples from multiple donors are available for larger volume needs.
Vitreous humor is evaluated for clarity and absence of visible hemorrhage. The gel-like consistency is maintained during collection. Samples are centrifuged to remove cellular debris before aliquoting. Samples with significant blood contamination are excluded from standard inventory.
